Crypto vs Forex: Why Your Trading Journal Needs Different Rules for Each Market

You've been trading EUR/USD for eight months. Your system works. 1% risk per trade, 30-pip stop loss, clean entries off the 1-hour chart. Then a friend shows you his BTC/USD account — up 40% in three weeks. You open a crypto account, apply the same rules, and within five days you've taken three stop losses that felt like they came out of nowhere. Your 30-pip stop that works perfectly on EUR/USD gets hunted by a single 4-minute candle on Bitcoin. Same rules. Completely different result. Welcome to the most expensive lesson in cross-market trading.

Same Charts, Different Games

Forex and crypto charts look identical. Same candlesticks. Same indicators. Same patterns. This visual similarity is a trap that catches thousands of traders every year. The charts look the same, but the markets behind them behave in fundamentally different ways — and if your trading journal doesn't account for these differences, your data is misleading you.

The core difference comes down to three factors: volatility, liquidity, and market hours. Each of these affects how you should size positions, place stops, set targets, and evaluate your performance. A journal that treats a 2R winner on EUR/USD the same as a 2R winner on SOL/USD is comparing apples to hand grenades.

Volatility: The Number That Changes Everything

EUR/USD moves an average of 50-80 pips per day. Bitcoin moves 2-5% per day — which on a $60,000 price is $1,200 to $3,000. In pip terms (if you even think in pips on crypto), that's the equivalent of 1,200-3,000 pips. Ethereum, Solana, and smaller altcoins are even more volatile.

This means a stop loss that's perfectly reasonable on forex — 30 pips on EUR/USD, roughly 0.25% of price — would be absurdly tight on Bitcoin. A 0.25% move on BTC happens in seconds, not hours. Your "disciplined stop loss" becomes noise. The market will hit it, reverse, and go to your target while you sit on the sidelines wondering what happened.

What This Means for Your Journal

Your journal needs to track stop loss distance relative to the instrument's average volatility, not as an absolute number. A 30-pip stop on EUR/USD (0.25% of price) and a 1,500-point stop on BTC/USD (2.5% of price) might represent the same quality of trade — the stop is placed at a logical structure level with room for normal price action. But if your journal just shows "30 pips" vs "1,500 points," the crypto trade looks insane.

Track your stops as a multiple of ATR (Average True Range) instead. A stop at 1.5× ATR on EUR/USD and 1.5× ATR on BTC/USD are equivalent in risk-adjusted terms, even though the raw numbers are wildly different.

ATR-based stop comparison

EUR/USD daily ATR: ~60 pips. A 90-pip stop = 1.5× ATR. BTC/USD daily ATR: ~$2,000. A $3,000 stop = 1.5× ATR. Same relative risk. Completely different raw numbers. Your journal should normalize this — otherwise you'll constantly second-guess your crypto stops for being "too wide" when they're actually proportionally identical to your forex stops.

Position Sizing: Where Forex Traders Get Destroyed

Here's where the rubber meets the road. On a $10,000 forex account trading EUR/USD with 1% risk and a 30-pip stop loss, your position size is roughly 0.33 lots. The math is clean and familiar. Now apply 1% risk to Bitcoin with a $3,000 stop. Your maximum position size is $100 ÷ $3,000 per coin = 0.033 BTC. On a $60,000 BTC price, that's a position worth $2,000 — just 20% of your account.

Many forex traders see that 20% position and think they're being too conservative. On forex, they're used to controlling $33,000 worth of currency (0.33 lots) with a $10,000 account — 3.3× leverage. So they size up their crypto position to "feel normal." This is how accounts get blown. The 1% risk rule doesn't change between markets, but the position size it produces does — dramatically. Trust the math, not the feeling.

Leverage Differences

Forex brokers commonly offer 50:1 or 100:1 leverage. Crypto exchanges typically offer 5:1 to 20:1, with some going higher. But here's what most traders miss: you don't need the same leverage on crypto because the underlying volatility is already 5-10× higher than forex. Trading BTC at 10× leverage is like trading EUR/USD at 50-100× leverage in terms of actual portfolio risk.

Your journal should track effective volatility exposure, not just leverage. A 5× leveraged BTC position has roughly the same daily P/L swing as a 25-50× leveraged EUR/USD position. If you're used to 30:1 on forex and you apply 20:1 on crypto, you haven't maintained the same risk level — you've multiplied it by three or four.

Market Hours: The 24/7 Problem

Forex has sessions. London opens, New York overlaps, Tokyo takes over. There are quiet hours and active hours. You can leave a position overnight and reasonably expect that price won't gap 10% while you sleep — because even in the Asian session, major pairs have enough liquidity to move smoothly.

Crypto never closes. There is no "after hours." Bitcoin can move 8% on a Sunday morning while you're at brunch. Ethereum can gap on a Tuesday at 3 AM because a whale dumped $50 million on a thin order book. If you're holding crypto positions overnight — or over a weekend — your risk is fundamentally different from a forex position held overnight. Journal Implications

Your journal should flag overnight and weekend crypto holds separately. Track their outcomes versus intraday trades. Many traders discover that their overnight crypto holds have significantly worse risk-adjusted returns because of the gap risk. The solution isn't to stop holding overnight — it's to adjust position size when you do. Some traders cut crypto size by 50% for any position they plan to hold through a sleep cycle.

His system was a pullback strategy on the 4-hour chart — wait for a trend, wait for a pullback to the 20 EMA, enter on a confirmation candle, stop below the pullback low.   • Risk per trade (1-2% of account) — this rule is universal and does not change between markets.
  • Pre-trade checklist — the criteria might differ per instrument, but the habit of running a checklist before every entry is non-negotiable.
  • Emotional logging — fear, greed, revenge, and boredom work the same way whether you're trading yen or Solana.
  • Weekly review — review each market separately, then look at combined discipline metrics.

The Adaptation Mindset

The best multi-market traders don't use one rigid system across all instruments. They use one set of principles — trend identification, pullback entries, structure-based stops, calculated risk — and adapt the parameters for each market. The principle is the same. The execution is different.

Your journal is the tool that tells you whether your adaptation is working. When your ATR-normalized stops, your win rates, and your average R-multiples are similar across markets, you know your system is properly calibrated. When they diverge — crypto win rate 30% lower than forex, crypto average loss 2× larger — you know exactly where to look. Not at the strategy. At the parameters.

The traders who blow accounts switching between markets are the ones who don't track this data. They apply forex rules to crypto, wonder why it doesn't work, conclude that "crypto is just gambling," and go back to forex — missing out on an entirely viable market because they didn't adjust their tools.
